A Place to Bury Strangers

Then I had perhaps the biggest revelation of the festival; New York trio A Place to Bury Strangers. Noisy but melodic music in the vein of Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, they blew me away completely at skull crunching volume. Great songs, great performance.

Brooklyn noise-rockers A Place To Bury Strangers have announced that they will release their debut, self-titled album in the UK on November 2 on the Rocket Girl label.

From the NY Times -
Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey on Tuesday rejected the idea of bringing criminal charges against former Justice Department employees who improperly used political litmus tests in hiring decisions, saying he had already taken strong internal steps in response to a “painful” episode.

Spare me any more drivel about the high-mindedness of John McCain. You knew something was up back in March when, in his first ad of the general campaign, Mr. McCain had himself touted as “the American president Americans have been waiting for.” ….
Nevertheless, it’s frustrating to watch John McCain calling out Barack Obama on race. Senator Obama has spoken more honestly and thoughtfully about race than any other politician in many years. Senator McCain is the head of a party that has viciously exploited race for political gain for decades.
He’s obviously more than willing to continue that nauseating tradition.

A report by the Department of Justice cites several instances of illegal hiring practices,
Internal Justice Dept. Report Cites Illegal Hiring Practices.
Yet another example of Bush & the Republicans he appointed have abusing their power and acted illegally.
For nearly two years, a young political aide sought to cultivate a “farm system” for Republicans at the Justice Department, hiring scores of prosecutors and immigration judges who espoused conservative priorities and Christian lifestyle choices.
It sure would be nice to see the law applied to the lot of them. More reason to bring Kucinich’s call for impeachment to consideration by the Congress.

Bob Herbert has a really appropriate op-ed piece in todays NY Times, “Can Obama Run the Offense?
McCain’s constant whining is getting tiresome. Here is the opening that got my attention:
Let’s see if I’ve got this straight. Barack Obama is a United States senator, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and his party’s candidate for president of the United States — and yet it was somehow presumptuous of him to meet with foreign leaders last week during his trip to the Middle East and Europe.
I’ll say this about Senator Obama. He sure raises people’s hackles. I’ve never seen anyone so roundly criticized for such grievous offenses as giving excellent speeches and urging people of different backgrounds to take a chance on working together. How dare he? And 200,000 people turned out to hear him in Berlin. Unforgivable.
