A pear and an apple, closely

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Looking at some fruit on our table made me want to photograph them. After several shots it seemd that up close worked best, although I must admit I get a little squeamish looking at the close up of the pear. Click on the image and let me know if it affects you the same way.

Snow days - March 2009

March came in like a lion and gave us some great snow. Here are some pictures.

The sunlight this morning a little before 7 was illuminating the leaves on the red maple in our front garden. We had strong thunderstorms the past two days and the leaves were coated with rain drops. Click on either image for a closer view. The tree is about 4 feet tall now, and we’ve had it since it was less than a foot high, just a stick from Genine. There’s another view of the tree in the entry of April 5, 2006.

AND what is so rare as a day in June?
Then, if ever, come perfect days;
Then Heaven tries earth if it be in tune,
And over it softly her warm ear lays;
Whether we look, or whether we listen,
We hear life murmur, or see it glisten;
-
excerpt from “THE VISION OF SIR LAUNFAL”, James Russell Lowell

We have an outstanding hollyhock plant in our garden this year. It was planted last summer and bought last year at the Fredericksburg Farmers Market from a woman who raises flower plants in King George. The weather, soil, and who knows what else have combined to produce an outstanding plant. It’s an old-fashioned variety with single blooms; just what we wanted.

Here are some other pics of the hollyhock.

I also took a picture of a coreopsis that seems to be doing well. It was one of Lynn’s pics last year at France Nursery just up the road from us.

Here are a few pictures I took yesterday of our beech tree. The rain made the bark look almost black and gave the sheen. The tree looks muscular to me, with as much strength as the Minotaur. Click on a thumbnail to see the pic at full size.

Speaking of the Minotaur, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break is a very good read. “The Minotaur, having endured 5000 years of immortality, is currently living in a trailer park in the Deep South, working as a line cook in a restaurant.”

The creek in our back yard

Whan that aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of march hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Whan zephirus eek with his sweete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
Tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the ram his halve cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open ye
(so priketh hem nature in hir corages);.

Today was really warm with a brief sprinkling in the morning. A beautiful sunny day followed. Here are a few pics from the front garden.

A close up of some of the lilacs that “jumped” from a neighbor’s yard to ours.
Another shot of the lilacs. They are beautiful and at their prime. I wish you could smell these.
Some of the fennel that’s springing up, self-seeding from last year. Just as they look here, they are very green and beautiful fronds. Great in a salad or with cooked foods.

It rained! Some rain Friday and all day Saturday.

A view from our bedroom window. The subtle colors of spring as the trees begin to leaf out.
Another view from the same window, but looking down to the wheelbarrow that’s catching the water and all the leaves we still have to rake.

Some simple pics of what’s going on in the front garden. Maybe this will be the beginning of a garden journal blog - a garjoug? a garjog?

maple leaves
The leaves on the red maple as they are just starting to unfold. We got this tree as a tiny stick from our good friend Genine Lentine.
pineaplesage leaves<
A pic of the emerging leaves of a pineapple sage plant. The plant is common enough, but it’s not so common for one to winter over here. We’ve been buying them and planting them for several years, but this is only the second time one has survived the winter outdoors.
daffodils
Finally, the great harbinger of spring - daffodils! Severl of our daffodils are finished by now, but this one, the variety long forgotten, is doing very nicely.

It snowed part of yesterday and all last night, giving us the gift of great snow scenes when we woke up.

Here are a few. Click ‘em if you want to see them bigger.
