Running From Reality

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Anothe excellent op-ed piece in the NY Times today. “Running from reality,” by Rob Herbert.  He accurately and succintly puts the Republican gobbleygook where it belongs.

If there was one pre-eminent characteristic of the Republican convention this week, it was the quality of deception. Words completely lost their meaning. Reality was turned upside down.

Or, as Joe Biden said today “What fo you ttalk about when you have nothing to say about 8 years of failed policies?”

Remarks about Bush in the Toronto Star

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Today’s Toronto Star contains an opinion piece titled “Bush’s woes ensure little will get done.” The piece discusses the situation that since Bush is unpopular, unsuccessful, and generally viewed as inept, that while the leaders of Mexico and Canada and Bush meeting today, it is likely that they will try to keep their distance from Bush and his ideas.

“Bush is viral,” says a long-time insider who has seen two generations of Canadian and Mexican leaders interact privately with this Uncle of Sam. “Politically, no one can afford to get too close to him.”

An infectious president creates two problems: One for the staggering process to advance shared North American interests, the other for a minority Prime Minister struggling for a majority.

Bush’s unpopularity makes it virtually certain leaders will leave the nearby Montebello resort having accomplished little more than deepening conspiracy theories that the security and prosperity agenda is a cover for accelerated continental integration. Sure, a final communiqué, both written and leaked before the meeting began, boasts new commitments to open borders, but progress on most of the 300-item, two-year-old to-do list is too small to measure.”

The piece also describes Bush as “crossbreed of elephant and lame-duck.” Well put.

bush-cheney web site blocks foreign visitors

Thursday, October 28th, 2004

Doesn’t this seem to be xenophobic? The Bush-Cheney Web site, http://www.georgewbush.com/, has blocked access to the site by clients (browsers) that are located on foreign computers - those outside of the U.S. It’s not a complete ban because computes form Canada can view the site. Reports are available in the Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A2668-2004Oct27.html.

Maybe it’s not that surprising since they only allow people who agree with them to attend campaign rallies, they get their news only from hand-picked resources, and don’t bother to respond to charges published in news outlets they don’t agree with (until the story gets so big they have to make some response.)

Other reports on this story are available from Netcraft, “Bush Campaign Web Site Rejects Non-US Visitors and BBC News, “Bush website blocked outside US. The report by Netcraft suggested that the blocking may be done to manage hosting costs. It does trim transfer rates to IP addresses outside of North America.

Cheney caught in a lie again

Wednesday, October 6th, 2004

Cheney needs to check his facts:

“Xeni Jardin: During last night’s vice presidential debate, Dick Cheney advised viewers interested in his version of the facts about Halliburton to visit factcheck.com. Evidently, he meant to direct them to factcheck dot ORG, but mis-spoke. Factcheck dot COM redirects you to GeorgeSoros.com which contains arguments on “why we must not re-elect President George Bush.” Whups. :)” - from BoingBoing Blog.

With God on Our Side

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

With God On Our Side” by Bob Dylan was released in 1964 on his album The Times They are A-Changin’. It think that song echoed the feelings of many of us that the world seemed to be headed for self-annihilation.

I was thinking about the song yesterday while working in the garden, some 40 years after its release. It doesn’t seem that the world is as close to nuclear war as it was then. If we take it that the end of the cold war and collapse of the Soviet Union alleviated that threat, then maybe god was on our side, if you give, as is currently popular, President Reagan some of the credit for that. But we paid the price.

God in fact punished us because Reagan was president and the policies he and his cronies encouraged, and implemented through legislation and decrees, have done nothing but hurt this country for 20 years or more.

It’s a good song, though. “Masters of War” on Freewheelin Bob Dylan is another great one - with Dick Cheney being the poster boy for that song.

The usual: Republicans slander and lies

Friday, September 3rd, 2004

Once again the RNC showed its colors at its convention this week. The speeches were particularly hateful, slanderous, and filled with lies. Who can believe or trust them? They want my vote? I know I can do better than that.

Here are some links that I found interesting to read on the subject:

Lies, Damned Lies, and Convention Speeches
Smear and Pivot
Feel the Hate

Why doesn’t the RNC deal with the real issues, such as the economy, health care, and quality of life for our society?
